The Crónica de la población de Ávila is a text that bears interest for scholarship on the hispanic Middle Ages for several reasons: it is the first historiographic text written in Romance language in the Iberian peninsula; it includes and presents several examples of texts of various genres from the peninsula; and it shows with clarity the view that a group of “commoner knights” (caballeros villanos) had of their own class. Only since its first edition in 1943 it began to receive due attention: its critical history is just beginning. Here we present a review of the main approaches to that text that have come to light up to the present time.
