Abstract

The ample diffusion of paroemic statements in medieval Literature derives from the existence of a proverbial mentality in the man of the time, that extends to all the social layers and impregnates the diverse cultural manifestations. In this work I set out to study the phenomenon in Refranes que dizen las viejas tras el fuego by Marqués de Santillana, because the collection of sayings constitutes an appropriate corpus to observe the cultural practices on which thought is molded. I will focus on the proverbs that allude to the culinary scope, since they reveal with clarity the empirical character of sayings
