Abstract

The common good is the good of the political community. It is the good of the human being and it is necessarily common to all people, because it belongs to them on the ontological level. The common good is, therefore, the purpose of politics understood as royalty (and not as an exercise of sovereignty); it represents the criterion of the proper order of the human community. It is the good of reason, understood in a contemplative sense and consequently it is the good of the person “naturae rationalis individuua substantia”. Modern political theories, mistakenly, identify the common good or as a private good (weak modernity), or as a public good (strong modernity). They lack the objectivity proper to the good, because they make the good depend on the content of the will.
