Abstract

The text analyses the final passage of Plato's Gorgias, where Socrates recounts a myth about the judgement of souls, following a discussion with the Sophists about the best way of life: one based on appearance and ignorance or centred on the search for truth and justice. The análisis first considers the status of truth in myth for Plato. It then looks at some key points in the passage about the descent into Hades in Odyssey XI and finally draws some conclusions about the value of Homeric poetry in the eschatological myth of Gorgias, based on the philosophical message of the dialogue.
