Abstract

The beginning and the end of literary ancient works had a significant value in programmatic terms. The proem of Ovid’s Metamorphoses informs the reader that the main subject of the work is the change from the beginning of the world until the poet’s times. But here a problem of manuscripts appears, the variants illas/illa. The aim of this paper is to analyze the critical and philological course of these manuscript variants in the second verse of the proem of Ovid’s Metamorphoses. In order to achieve that, it will go through main editions of the work between the nineteenth and twenty-one centuries and discussions about variants.
