Abstract

In response to the forthcoming proclamation of Hildegard of Bingen as a doctor of the Church, announced by Pope Benedict XVI for October 7,2012, this arricie reflects on the relationship between experience and language in Christian mysticism. After the necessary demarcation of epistemological frameworks -historical, phenomenological and theological- in which the issue has been addressed, an integrated response of both traditions is put for- ward on the basis of the theological aesthetic principie Hans Urs von Balthasar called “visión of the figure”. The thesis is based on the analysis of the descritive, interpretive and plástic text of the Prologue and First Vision in the First Part of the Corpus Scivias and the letters that were addressed by Bernard of Clairvaux, Guibert of Gembloux.
