Abstract

In the mid-seventeenth century we find Indians living together with neighbors and settlers in different situations, in cities such as Corrientes, Santa Fe and Asunción among others that deserve to be studied in detail. We thus have Indians in concierto, in depósito or in the situation of vacante. We intend to address the characteristics of life of those Indians related to the colonial society of Corrientes and Santa Fe in the specific cases. Our goal is to have a close knowledge of who those Indians were, who the inhabitants of those cities whom they were related with were and what the presence of that population meant for the neighbors and officials. In order to discuss the issue, we shall take into consideration the cases mentioned by the oidor Garavito Andrés de León (1650-1652) during his visit to those cities. From there, we hope to give further details about a population that to our knowledge has always been analyzed under the existing systems of encomienda and reducciones rather than individually.
