Abstract

The United States of America provided Alexis de Tocqueville and Domingo Faustino Sarmiento with a unique model upon a historical context of needful social renewal in their homeland. Common personal experience led them to theorize on the function of education in the mechanics of American democracy. This work focuses on both author's conception of the role of State and religion on shaping the educational basis for society, and consequently on their exercise of democratic governance.
