The policy of encouraging immigration promoted in Argentina since the mid-nineteenth century included, among its objectives, to generate a change in native customs. This paper describes the reality resulting as a consequence of the incorporation of foreign cultural patterns, and analyses –from a cut centered in the province of Santa Fe in the last two decades of nineteenth century– the behaviors revealed by the political and intellectual elites of the province with respect to domestic and foreign customs. What is sought is to assess if these behaviors could be conditioned by different political and ideological attachments and / or by variants historical circumstances.
