Jose Fernando de Abascal y Sousa received word of the 1806 British invasion of Buenos Aires at the beginning of his term as viceroy of the viceroyalty of Peru. This fi rst missive sent by Viceroy Rafael de Sobre Monte developed into an epistolary exchange between both authorities about such event, which gave way to the worries, cautionary measures, and initial defense policies applied by Abascal in his jurisdiction.
