Keywords:

Based on Spanish diplomatic documentation, this paper analyzes certain characteristics of the Spanish migration to the Americas, both from the peninsula to Argentina and to the Antilles. The study focuses on a specific event. At a certain point, a group of Spanish immigrants who had suffered harrowing hardships in Argentina asked to be transferred to Cuba, although our country had never lost its place as their favorite destination in Latin America. In order to present a more clear and detailed view of this episode, the political and economic situation of Spain, Argentina and Cuba at the end of the 19th century is thoroughly considered. The sources used during research for this paper include literature and documentation specially requested from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spain.
