Abstract

The Memories of Tomás de Iriarte, student of the Royal Military School at Segovia during the beginning of the Spanish Independence War and then commissioned officer at different war fronts against the French army, providean assortment of information about the organization of one of the most prestigious military institutes in Spain; and is also a rich source about people’s reaction towards the French invaders, and of the different military actions that took place in the southern front until the end of the struggle, with the return of  Ferdinand VII as absolute monarch. Moreover, the Memories give us relatively unknown details regarding the civilian’s and soldier’s daily life and show us the military support to the ideals of the Constitution of 1812.
