Based on a reading of Fan, the Story of a Young Girl's Life (1892) that aims to fill a gap in specialized criticism, we intend to explore lines of inquiry that examine the reasons for the supposed failure of the work and W.H. Hudson's abandonment of the three-volume novel format, the Hudsonian identity projections in the novel, the literary representation of urban space, and finally, the author's relationship with the poetics of George Gissing and Thomas Hardy and his repositioning of the tradition of Dickensian realism.
