Abstract

The aim of this work is to examine the institutional situation of the council of Jewish elders of Alexandria from the data recorded by Philo in In Flaccum 74. The functioning of this council is attested in the books of the Pentateuch (Ex 3, 16 and 18; Lv 9, 1; Nm 22, 4), and there is evidence of its existence in the Diaspora communities. The Letter of Aristeas (310) mentions the presence of a group of elders in Alexandria during the translation of the Septuagint, although it is Philo who provides the data which prove the activity of that council as an administrative institution of his community. Through the interpretation of In Flaccum 74, we intend to trace the terms associated with this institution and the data about its functioning in the Jewish community of Roman Alexandria.
