Abstract

The article invites to look at the dichotomy between economy and society. For this, Hoevel presents an overview of different images of the market. The first one, represented by a total space market, described from the city of Chicago and Becker’s ideas. Then, the second image refers to the tensions between market and society, throughout the ideas developed by Coraggio. Finally, the author concludes by presenting the image of the market as a human and civil space, presenting Zamagni´s concepts. Thus, the author leaves open the question as to which of the three images will dominate the agenda of policy decisions, economic and social reality, and in the symbolic imagery of our culture.
