Abstract

Slavery in Modern History meant a deeply-rooted social reality. The last link in a society divided into the estates of the realm and framed within the kingdom of Toledo in the lands of Castile, this article deals with different aspects on the condition of the slaves: description and physical appearance, typology of the causes for slavery, slave trading, occupations and services they worked in, behaviour and social unrest and, finally, manumission. For that purpose, different sources from religious and nobiliary archives have been used as well as abundant notarial and judicial documentation.
