The representation of Alfonso X in the contemporary sephardic texts of "Aki Yerushalayim"

Abstract

The cultural magazine Aki Yerushalayim, founded in 1979, contains all kinds of information about the history, language, folklore, customs, etc. of the Sephardim. In this work, I focus on the representation of Alfonso X (1221-1284), describing and analysing the two articles that Aki Yerushalayim dedicated to the known as Wise King. Although he is not a recurring character in the magazine, the analysis of these texts is of particular interest because they focus on the influence of the Jews in the spread of Spanish as the language of the administration. In this way, these magazine articles written in contemporary Judeo-Spanish are a first-hand source on the vision that the Sephardim currently have of the emblematic figure of Alfonso X the Wise.
