Abstract

The study of the relationship of Cidian epic poetry and historiographical prose has been mostly focused on Poema de Mio Cid. The conclusions from the analysis of chronistic versions of the mature hero’s exploits are usually extrapolated to the young hero’s legend. Though main scholars, such as Menéndez Pidal or Catalán, have pointed the idiosincracies of both late epic poetry and post-alphonsine historiography, we do not have, since Samuel Armistead’s doctoral research fifty years ago, new specific studies on the writing process involved in the historiographical use of Mocedades de Rodrigo. This essay intends to formulate new hypotheses about the old question of the textual relationship of the epic poem and the chronicles named Crónica de Castilla and Crónica General de 1344; also about the argued point of their chronological priority
