Abstract

During the nineties tango and fado re-emerge with a high impact of international
projection. At the end of that decade, the singer of tangos Karina Beorlegui discovers
the fado, expands her repertoire to this genre and becomes an ambassador of fado in
Argentina. Beorlegui cultivates both musics, basing his choice on the existing
affinities between them, which share the circumstance of having been born in port
cities. The singer's choice focuses mainly on classics tangos and fados, so that their
joint performance proposes a reinterpretation of both in the light of the dialogue
provoked between them. The purpose of this conference is to raise the possibility of
finding links between these two port genres and outline some convergences,
fundamentally in their poetics. We will introduce some triggers on the way in which
tango and fado have seen themselves in their lyrics and on the relation of the poetic
subject with the urban port space.
