Abstract

Juan José Castro used tango music as material for some of his works for nearly 20 years. Certainly, he was a connoisseur of the genre, since he had practiced it in his youth. Currently, he is considered a paradigmatic actor when the issue of the neoclassicism and vernacular materials in Argentina is approached. The purpose of this paper is to study the presence of tango in the work of Juan José Castro and the way he articulates academic and popular languages. Unlike other uses of tango in academic music, Castro’s is inclusive and develops, through the selection of certain tango materials, his own tango, recognizable throughout in his work.
