Abstract

This article provides results regarding research on musical training being given during the XIX Century under the auspicious of ecclesiastical authorities in México. This is a topic which had never before been handled in specialized studies. This text establishes the place assigned to bowed string instruments within the frame of musical education offered by the Mexican Catholic church to her students, sets down objectives, forms ad main participants in teaching and, taking advantage of a vast corpus of unpsblished documentary sources, upholds íts thesís of the solídness of theorical and practical musical instruction granted in the second half of that century by the Catedral Collage to its "infantes", a feat never theretofore having been equaled or surpassed by any other educational enterprise.
