Abstract

This article establishs links between power relations and the prodution of sound in the context of Paraguyan Jesuit Missions. Firstly, I discuss the current models of analysis of "sound experience" emphasizing the actors point of view. Secondly, I describe the uses of concrete sounds in Missions' daily life and ritual contexts as hegernonic rnecanisrns of power construction. Thirdly, I study sorne relations between sound and indigenous resistance. Finally, I propose to analyse spaces of negotiation between the European traditions irnposed by the Jesuits and sorne indigenous elernents.
