Abstract

Décadas of Peter Martyr d’Anghiera, written between the late 15th and early 16th century and constitute, together with the Diario ofColumbus, one of the first registers of the discovery of the lands beyond the ocean. The text of Peter Martyr was subjected to multiple interpretations in different historical contexts; on this paper, we wish to focus our attention on some less studied aspects: the particular translation by Joaquin Torres Asensio in 1892, translation that gives an account of a process of ideological appropriation of Anghiera’s writing. This investigation stops at lexical-semantic aspects that account for discursive operations supported by a hegemonic project of translation.
