Abstract

The Kephalaia gnostica is one of the main works by Evagrius of Pontus. It was written in Greek but we only have two syriacs versions: a longer one, with a strong stress on origenism doctrine, that Antoine Guillamont asserts that is the one that reproduce the original text of Evagrius, and a shorter version.

In his most recent book, published in 2013, Augustine Casiday considers that the original version is the shorter one. This assertion implies that Evagrius is “beyond heresy” and then his theology must be reconstructed.

In this paper I present the two positions and propose some elements to contribute to the debate.
