Abstract

The purpose of this article is to investigate a little-known aspect of Juan Bautista Alberdi: his reception in the normalist field and more specifically in the Popular Societies of Education and their schools. The appropriations and the uses made by young educators at the end of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century, both of the figure and of the Alberdi writings are examined in order to legitimize their arguments and their educational policies. I study educators, and this is my general hypothesis, that they appropriate the practical conception of Alberdian education and question the subject of their "possible republic" which, in their eyes, is positive in part because it must be formed not only to produce wealth but also to defend the nation; These are educators who participate in Popular Schools, on the side of the government and on the side of civil society, with the purpose, clearly liberal and patriotic, whether they are neighbors, teachers, students grouped in Popular Education Societies, finally hold and administer these school sites, but the result is not as expected, as I notice, in the cases of Esquina and Mercedes (province of Corrientes) and Lomas de Zamora (Province of Buenos Aires).
