Abstract

This article is written by two authors, each of them exposing different aspects of the opera Marianita limeña. Pola Suárez Urtubey traces a reflexion upon the works of the peruvian writer Ricardo Palma, who offers through his Tradiciones Peruanas a great picture, sometimes happy, sometimes bitter, of the colonial society of his town. By revising archives and interpreting them, sometimes with extreme liberty, Palma managed to tell legends, scandals, genre traces and traditions, with a concise and penetrating style, which show a humorous spirit that sometimes can be tainted with a hint of scepticism. It is in one of these traditions, El divorcio de la condesita, where Francisco Javier and the composer Valdo Sciammarella get their inspiration. The latter was in charge of the analysis of his own opera in a study that pays attention to the different parts that compose it: “pregones” and popular “coplas” “recitativos” with “arioso”, madrigals, arias and orchestral fragments.
