¿Traslados estadísticos, ocultamientos raciales o invisibilizaciones? Los invisibles en los registros censales de Corrientes a mediados del siglo XIX

Abstract

In this work we propose to explore the gradual disappearance of racialized categories in the Corrientes censuses towards the middle of the XIX century. We will appeal to two hypotheses: the role of the state as the central agent of statistical processes and that of individuals in the face of transfers in racial categories. We will be interested in investigating the process looking for a confrontation of what was happening in other sources, where the master presented the subject or the individual himself defined himself before the Corrientes authorities. In these sources, we find that the use of ethnic-racial categories was present until the mid-19th century; aspect that differs substantially from what happened from census sources. For which, we will start from a theoretical consideration on the transformation of the colonial censuses to the construction of the liberal grids. Then we will explore some necessary breed and race notions that we will use throughout the article. We will characterize the elaboration of the current standards and we will focus on considering the census invisibility. In a later instance, we will contrast the different uses of racialized categories in notarial and judicial sources with what occurs in census sources. The possibility of contrasting the different uses of racial categories will allow us to get closer to seeing how individuals shaped and appropriated diverse forms of ascription throughout their lives.
