Abstract

In times of restricted democracy, Santa Fe was a social and political model according to the prevailing national scale, but with certain peculiarities. One of our concerns has been to inquire about this particular social conformation of the ‘Santafesino’ (Translator’s note: coming from Santa Fe city/province) notable circle in the early twentieth century, which neither constituted an oligarchy - like the one operating in the national government-, nor a bourgeoisie - like the one in Rosario in the provincial context. However, it maintained a well-defined identity and practices that gave it unity as a social group. The conditions to enter the privileged circle of Santa Fe society are a gateway to look at the social conformation of the ‘Santafesina’ elite in the first decades of the last century. Among the mechanisms of access, politics, the press and the field of education were some of the most frequent ones.
