Abstract

Great Nations are the result of the encouraging vision of a group of men, who with a thorough understanding of reality are capable of finding the necessary solutions. For Sarmiento, education was the ultimate instrument for the making of a modern state, but he was also concerned about the strengthening of the Army and the Navy after his experiences in the Argentine and American civil wars and the war of the Triple Alliance. This paper focuses on Sarmiento’s military thoughts, which materialized during his different appointments, and especially during his presidency with the acquisition of modern military equipment and the creation of the first military academies.
