Abstract

This article provides arqueological preliminary information regarding the Maldonado Bay Subaquatic Archaeology Project, in an attempt to make known, document and explain some of the episodes that led to the sinking of the San Salvador Frigate, an event considered one of the worst sea tragedies of the River Plate during independence days. The analysis of the historical documents and the excavations results from Uruguay have allowed us to reconstruct part of the shipwreck as well as to corroborate the space distribution of the objects on board, offering a revealing insight on the way the incident took place as well as a contextual evaluation of the event.
